Rettix - one click withdrawal and return for PrestaShop

From June 19, 2026, new EU regulations come into force requiring that every online store customer must be able to withdraw from a contract without the need to print and fill out any forms.

What does this look like in the case of PrestaShop?

PrestaShop includes a product return system where you can configure statuses and manage returns, but it has several limitations:

• it is available only to customers with a registered account
• it requires providing a reason for the return
• every paid and shipped order is eligible for return
• there is no built-in way to exclude virtual products from returns
• there is no built-in way to exclude customized products from returns
• MailAlerts module sends notifications only to the shop administrator, not to the customer

However, the new regulations require that any customer must be able to withdraw from a contract in an easy way, without having to provide a reason. Additionally, the condition PrestaShop uses to allow returns may not be suitable for every store.

That’s why, instead of reinventing everything from scratch, we developed a simple module that allows you to bypass PrestaShop limitations.

It enables adding an extra “Withdraw” button on the order history page or order details page.

After clicking the button, the customer is redirected to a return form where he can request a full or partial return, and providing a reason is optional.

This form is available regardless of whether the order was placed by a registered customer or a guest.

Once completed and submitted, the form is sent to PrestaShop’s built-in system, where the return can be handled using standard functionalities.

To fully comply with all requirements, the module also complements PrestaShop’s MailAlerts behavior by forwarding return notification emails to customers and supplementing them with the return request date.

Additionally, the module (using a very small override) allows you to change the condition that determines which orders are eligible for return. Instead of relying on orders being marked as “paid” and “shipped,” it can consider only specific order statuses. This setting also affects PrestaShop’s default return form.

The module also allows you to exclude specific types of products from the return process.

Virtual products can be blocked from being returned entirely. Such products remain visible in the return form so the customer can still see the complete order contents, but they cannot be selected for return.

Additionally, the module can block returns of customized products. Unlike a simple product-level restriction, Rettix checks whether the customer actually provided customization data when placing the order. Products that merely contain optional customization fields remain eligible for return unless customization was really used.

The module can also block return requests for orders with a VAT number in the invoice address. This is useful for merchants who want to handle consumer and business orders differently. If this option is enabled, an order with a VAT number in the invoice address will not be considered returnable, even if it matches the default PrestaShop return condition or the custom order-state-based condition.

This VAT-based restriction works independently of the custom return condition. It means that the order can be blocked from return even if it has the correct status, is within the configured return period, or would normally be accepted by PrestaShop’s default return logic.

The module can also hide the native PrestaShop return controls while keeping all order and product information visible. This allows merchants to avoid confusion and guide customers exclusively through the Rettix return workflow.

Another important feature is the built-in return history section. Customers and guests can review all previously submitted return requests directly from the return page. Each return request is displayed separately together with:

• return number
• current return status
• submission date
• customer message
• list of returned products and quantities

If the return period has expired but the order already contains return requests, the button remains available and automatically changes from “Withdraw from contract (return)” to “Return history”. This allows customers to access their return records even after the return window has closed.

The module automatically enables PrestaShop’s native return system during installation, helping merchants avoid configuration mistakes and ensuring that returns are ready to use immediately after installation.

This makes it easy to align the return process with your local regulations, store policies, or product-specific restrictions without modifying PrestaShop core files.
